Dodge

The division of the American corporation Chrysler specializing in manufacture of passenger cars and off-road vehicles. The headquarters of the company are situated in Highland Park (the suburb of Detroit).

The Americans John and Goreys Dodge founded the company in 1914 which among the first started to manufacture cars with all-metal bodies. The company owned by Dodge brothers came to manufacturing own cars in 1914. A small company which previously has been engaged in manufacture of components for Ford and Olds Motor factories had absorbed all the technological innovations of that time including the Ford technology of standardization and flow line assembly (Henry Ford had even put forward a claim against the brothers though he was not a success).

The first car of Dodge Brothers, which then has been jokingly named «Granny Betsy» has left the factory on the 14-th of November 1914 being soon followed by 249 same cars manufactured by the Dodges. Each of them had been decorated with the company symbol placed on top of the radiator – the globe placed in the center of the Star of Judah: the brothers paid tribute to their roots.

By 1920 the company occupied the second place after the Ford company as of the number of cars manufactured but both brothers died same year and the new head of the company became Fred J. Heins. The fortune of the both brothers was rather immense – over 20 million dollars reach. Besides the heirs of the brothers (they did not have heirs other than their widows) received 50% of the registered capital of the company.

In 1928 the Dodge concern was comprised by the Chrysler Corporation. Together with the production of passenger cars with Dodge brand the company manufactures off-road cars, mini-vans and pick-up cars. The brand symbol of Dodge has been changed many a time but the most often (same as today) the emblem contained the ram head. Some specialists are of the opinion that this had come from one of the models of Dodge which had a curved outlet manifold resembling screw horns of a mountain ram.
