In 1952, Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman founded the Lotus company. The first car produced commercially - Lotus 6, was offered to consumers in the form of sets of "do it yourself". In general, the production focuses on racing sports coupe. Aerodynamic improvements, lightweight body made of glass fiber contributed much to the success of Lotus in motor sport. In 1967, the company stopped selling cars in kits "do it yourself".
Today, Lotus holds a significant market share of sports cars, focusing on the production of sports coupe in small batches (Elise and Exige). All cars have different bodies made of fiberglass, but equipped with same engines. The «Lotus» company was bought by the «General Motors» Concern in 1986, and in 1996 it became the property of the Malaysian company «Proton».
