Paykan

The long-liver Paykan has gained little fame outside Iran but it has been a people’s car for more than 30 years in this country. As far back as in 1966 Chrysler who owned the English Hillman at that time, sold the license for Hillman Hunter production to an Iranian company – Iran Khodro. Hillman Hunter used to be quite a modern car at that time.

In Great Britain Hunter had been manufactured from 1967 up to 1979. The Iranian Hunter (called Salloon at some markets) had been revised for many times in its 30-years history but in general its design and exterior remained very close to the original. The customers could buy a 4-door five-passenger sedan in a classical package with the integrated body. The car was equipped with MacPherson strut, which used the axis of a telescopic damper as the upper steering pivot. The power packs included 1.6 and 1.8 L engines (the latter one had been constructed by French Peugeot) of 65 and 73 HP respectively.

It’s evident that only the fact that the Iranian market is very closed and relative cheapness of the car provide this Paykan car with pretty good demand. The output of this car increased from 90 000 in 1999 to 100 000 in 2000.
