SEAT company was founded in 1950. The founders were the National Institute of Industry (51%), several banks (42%) and FIAT (7%).
SEAT has been rapidly developing - the first car left the assembly line in 1953 and only 12 years later SEAT has been already producing more than 100,000 cars a year. In 1974, there appeared the two millionth SEAT and the company ranked eighth among the car manufacturers in Europe. In 1980 FIAT refuses from active participation in SEAT and two years later SEAT signed an agreement for industrial and commercial cooperation with Volkswagen.
SEAT made his five millionth car in 1983. The factories of SEAT started manufacturing the Volkswagen Passat model. In 1986, Volkswagen became a 51% share holder in the company, and by December its package of shares rose up to 75%. Construction of a new plant in Martorell started in 1989 - three years later it has been opened by Juan Carlos the King of Spain. In 1990, the Volkswagen Group acquired 99.99% shares of SEAT.
