Skoda

History of Skoda began in 1869 when the Czech engineer Emil Skoda became the head of a steel producer plant.

Skoda has brought and introduced to the company not only his own enthusiasm, but new technologies and the factory has purchased a large amount of modern equipment. Having organized a stable and high quality production process Skoda became the official supplier of weapons to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1899. The factory produced various weapons and ammunition, and the total number of workers in 1917 amounted to almost 35 000 people.

After the emergence of Czechoslovakia Skoda reoriented to peaceful industry, and has mastered the production of locomotives, passenger cars and trucks. The company is also engaged in the production of aircraft, ships and steam turbines.

The first Skoda car appeared in the late 20s.

As a result of massive air raids during the Second World War the plant was badly damaged and over 70% of the buildings and living spaces were destroyed. In 1945, Skoda was nationalized. Now the main line of production became the production of mass transport. Part of the vehicles’ output of the factory was exported to socialist countries.

In the 90s the company was bought by the German company Volkswagen, and received huge financial subvention. The plant was upgraded in a short time, and from that moment it began its intensive activity in Europe.

Currently the company manufactures four models of cars: Skoda Roomster, Skoda Octavia, Skoda Fabia and Skoda Superb, which have different types of engines and chassis. The characteristic feature of Skoda is a high quality of manufacture against the price which is lower than of comparable German cars.
