The new brand of Trabant was launched at the plant of «Horch-Audi» in Zwickau in eastern Germany on November 8, 1957,. The firm was named after the space satellite (in German «Trabant» - satellite) launched by the Soviet Union the same year.
In 1957, the GDR government decided to start production Trabant model of Sputnik. The car had a two-cylinder engine of 0.5 liter capacity of 19 hp.
Design of Trabant Sputnik was typical of Eastern European car industry: small and angular. Despite his unprepossessing appearance, Sputnik and the following "Trabant" for several decades have been popular with residents of the GDR and other socialist countries.
