Vauxhall

The company took its name after one area located at the Thames where a Norman merchant Falkes de Breauté married to a rich girl and bought a house in the early 13th century. This house was called Fulk’s House and later it transferred into Vauxhall.

Falkes de Breauté was a famous craftsman who made horse carts that found really quick sales. One day the citizens of the burg saw a cart made by Fulk roll without anybody’s help. Some of the most sensitive-natured citizens also saw the devils being harnessed instead of the horses. This mysterious event turned out to be a good advertisement to Breauté’s products.

When in 1857 Alexander Wilson founded his company in this area he took the griffon image from the coat of arms of Falkes de Breauté and made it an emblem of his own enterprise. At first the Wilson’s plant manufactured pumps and marine engines.

In 1903 the company was renamed as Vauxhall Iron Works Company and the same year it manufactured its first car. Two years after that the company moved to Luton.

The Vauxhall’s griffon was a creature with head and wings of eagle and lion’s body. This mythical bird combined the features of both the animal and the bird kings. That is why it stood for power and vigilance.

In the middle of the 20th century the Vauxhall started cooperation with the German Opel.

Today almost all the cars produced by the Opel AG Corporation sold in Great Britain have Vauxhall name plates.
