The start to the history of Zaporozhje Automotive Plant was initiated in 1863 with four small workshops owned by the colonist J. Koop, producing agricultural machinery and equipment. After the revolution of 1917, in 1921 the plant started its operation under the name of Kommunar and continued production of farming machines. After the World War II – on 18 June 1959 there appeared the first prototype car of "ZAZ-965" Zaporozhets " which has been rather popular with motorists in the Soviet Union of that time.
In 1988 they began producing "Tavria" cars. This was a rather modest passenger car popular with the motorists in the Soviet Union for a number of years and it has been sold out in a large quantity.
Ukraine-Korea joint venture called "AvtoZAZ-Daewoo» was formed in May of 1998.
The production of the Slavuta1103 car was started in 1999. In December 2003 they started the assembly of VAZ cars.
Now the car factory cooperates with some leaders of the world automotive industry: Adam Opel, Daimler AG, GM DAT, VAZ, TATA, Shery and Kia. Chevrolet Lanos which has been assembled by the factory since 2005 is manufactured under the brand name of ZAZ Chance since 1 July 2009. The car is marketed in Russia by the KVINGRUP company which is the authorized distributor of ZAZ in Russia and Kazakhstan.
